In
1930s and 40s movies pockets almost always smaller, more shaped, more stylish than today were in vogue,
likely scaled for the pack of smokes, a few bucks (if you were lucky)
but nothing big to add bulk and mar the look. Dash was the ethos of flight jacket design and the popular hysteria over all things
flying. Nearly every early aviator one sees in photos or newsreels, Amelia Earhart,
Wiley Post, Roscoe Turner, has a jacket with these scaled-down pockets, evoking the
streamlined look of Lockheeds , delivered from the mundane world of
toting and carrying. A rolled map, sunglasses, fine pigskin gloves. Note too the
genuine antique khaki Bakelite Buttons we found (limited availability).

Horsehide grain. (Greatly increased water resistance was one of the many
benefits of chrome tanning as compared to the earlier vegetable tanned hides,
which, in the muck and moisture of WWI trench warfare, rotted away, hence the
rapid change in garment leather in the 1930s to chromium tanning.)
